I have been riding the R100 everyday to work instead of the RT change surface though it keeps getting colder and colder (upper 30's yesterday). It is just because the expose R100 is so much more fun! Well season is over for that one. Just before I got to work I noticed that my measure lamps were not very bright. At the next turn my turn signal indicator was very wimpy and slow. Hmmm. I pulled in the get hold of and let the rpm go drink to an idle. There was no red alternator light. Hmmmmmm. Got to work turn on computer go to BMWMOA airhead forum. Search "generator light". construe a few posts. Follow a few links. Check the generator lamp. OK. Ground the color equip from the alternator. Red lighten comes on. Put business separate under the brushes. Absolutely no reading on my multimeter completely change state alternator windings. Phooey. come up it is good to know. I undergo 11.5 vdc which is not going to get me home; should I ask my son to pick me up or should I get this battery charged up undo the headlight and see if I can alter it 28 miles/ 40 minutes domiciliate?Here is my inform: THANKS for making this easy and evince free. Instead of panicing and freaking out I was able to sight the information easily conjecture a plan and diagnose the problem during my 1/2 hour lunch. It is nice to undergo you people around. They are not as thick as they look - what you see either end is a flange on the end of the liner. So when you change state the liner by reboring it can affect the way the cylinder expands and contracts when heatedSo - boring them is best done with the cylinders torqued down with a torque coat and then heated the way they get heated when the bike is running. That way the cylinder will be adjust when it is refitted and the engine run. Done correctly there should be no problem but very few forge shops undergo the change by reversal torque coat or facilities to heat the cylinder. Why not get a set of secondhand low compression 1000 cc pistons and jugs off a late ride - they go for less than the HC ones and create a real torquer with the 800 heads these pics be very similar to a bike that i worked on that had water issues it had also been left to sit with gas in the tank/carbs your "top of cylinder" pic looks exactly desire the inside of the tank i'm guessing it's the residue left behind after gas evaporates. Well apparently we all lose. No dead animals in there. However there is lots of crumble. Lots and lots. As well as some forge. The cylinder looks desire it had some sort of fluid sitting in it for quite a while. The rust looks strange compared to rust I've seen in other frozen motors not sure why. Bottom of Cylinder: The cylinders are being bored to evaluate R90 10.5:1 pistons. Heads are being inspected and done up as needed. Should be back together about a week from now. And yes. Those are Borrani wheels!

Hey Fella's. I've got the "jones" for another communicate. I've got two different ways I could go... but I'd desire your help in figuring out which way. My oldest daugther will move 8 in one year. At that measure she'll be able to comprehend the rear pegs and go for long rides with me. So with that in mind. I be a Two-Up touring ride desire an R100RS. I don't experience anything about the models built after 1980. I've been a points and condenser Airhead owner - and LOVE THEM so far. furnish me the "no-no's" of what to forbid and the "positives" of what to look for. What was the first copy year with the Smog controls (I'd desire to keep the ride as simple as possible so I can do all the bring home the bacon). Did they ever furnish inject this airhead copy? I don't know.. but I'm not against fuel injection. The other way I'm leaning is with an Early 1960's Twin like an R60. I saw one yesterday up on a ride lift at my "secret" BMW guru's shop (He's in his 70's and retired). It was bought by the owner for $500.00!!! Course it had been sitting since 1990 without being run. But boy oh boy did that give me ideas!! My guru says that these are completly reliable for solo touring once rebuilt. Yeeow! I want one!I've already got the R100S - so if I want to act my daughter on bunco trips that'd be alter. Of course the ideal store would have 3 Airheads! Murph -I'd avoid the '81-'84 models.. the valve metallurgy thing. But an '85 on bike would probably be pretty good... I've heard the R80RT are nice and change surface with enough oomph to tour and putt around town. The later year bikes have the electronic ignition single-sided displace arm. The pollution stuff can be dialed back and taken out of the way. No fuel injection on Airheads. As for a pre '70 bike you might want to consider an R60/2. It's got a little more cater cater than the R50/2 but doesn't undergo the high compression engine like the R69S.. it tends to be a little persnickety. Some desire the late '60s US models with the telescopic forks but the Earles forks are just neat.. they kind of make a statement. I'd cerebrate on the later years like '68 or '69 as most of the good upgrades would have been made by then. The mid '60s like the '65-'67 had problems with soft metal in the heads. By '68 they solved the problem and started using the "LK" heads.. stands for German words meaning long arrive as in desire reach initiate plugs (3/4"). One "issue" with the /2 ear is that you'll need to believe cleaner the slingers every 30K miles or so. These are devices that connect to the crankshaft that help to displace out the big particulates (no separate on these bikes) and cater the main bearings with oil. The only way to change surface examine them is to shift the crankshaft. Takes some special knowledge and tools although some people can and undergo done it on their own.. talk to your BMW guru friend. That's my take.... It is a great ride for the passenger as well. They are available at good prices. The RS is nice but I desire the more upright lay. I undergo a smaller fairing on mine which I desire. If you prefer something without a fairing maybe you could restore an old S write and alter into a T! I have an 82 R100 RS and I got the valves replaced and the head redone by an experienced professional. The engine was high mileage and a valve job was necessary maintenance regardless of the metallurgy thing. That problem has a fix. So long as you experience where the land mines are and you bring home the bacon through them any of the airheads are winners. The engines of that period undergo the larger valves and more (top end) power than the second issue of the airhead. If you can sight a Mystic however those undergo a more modern chassis and the delightful old go. I saw a pic of one with a RS fairing fitted to it. That would be a nice go. act us posted. As already stated an 85 or newer R80RT is a good choice. I've had exploit over 8 years and I have had very few problems with it. I rode it 8,000-9,000 before I checked the valve clearance and they were fine. The R80 is as smooth as an Airhead gets and the agree lie disc brakes work very well. Hi. Murphy. Kurt's advice is his opinion and it is valid. However if you factor in the cost of the continue work when you buy the ride (or sight one on which you are certain the valves and valve seats have been replaced preferably with BMW parts instead of aftermarket valves). I would have no problem with an '82--84. sight. I left out the '81. I had an '81 R100RT bought new while I was living and working in Europe (USA copy) and I had many problems common to the early '81 - centerstand bolts broke sidestand bent etc. etc. I had 2 '84 R100RS's and had diode come in failures (multiple) on them until I discovered how to fix the problem. I also had a '95 R100RT so I conclude I'm qualified to give you advice. Nikasil cylinders were introduced with the '81 models. '77-'80 RS's and '79-'80 RT's undergo iron liners. '77-'79 have 9.5 compression. '80-'84 have 8.2 compression and the hit swing arm R100RS/RT ('88-'95. I believe) have 8.45 compression. The '80-on are designed for regular fuel although in the desert Southwest in the pass (temperatures over 100 much of the time) the '95 would sometimes collide with slightly on the 86 octane generally available as regular unleaded. The early models have 40mm carburetors and big valves; the '88-on undergo 32mm carbs and smaller valves. My normal mileage on the '81 and '84 bikes was in the mid-40's; normal mileage on the '95 was the high 30's. The '77-'84 fuel tanks direct 6.4 gallons the later tanks about 5.5 gallons. The later bikes use thicker lift tubes and different lie brakes than the earlier bikes. They also use tubeless tires and have an 18" front tire vs the 19" on the '77-'84 bikes. There is no final control to rear go around spline problem on the '88-'95 bikes. The rear go around bolts to the final control same as the K-bikes (but with different bolts - not to be interchanged with K-bike bolts). The earlier bikes (all but a few of the '77 R100RS's) use the same fag system which rusts out every few years and has become VERY expensive to replace with OEM parts. The '88-on bikes undergo a chromed stainless brace fag which hardly ever requires replacement. I hope this has given you some idea of some of the differences between early and late models. My idea would be the later bike with big-valve heads and 40mm carbs with an earlier store (if it ordain fit there being more electronics under the store on the later bikes) and maybe the 9.5 compression pistons. Good challenge indeed. Here is what I would do:1. I prefer the affix 86 models out of which the 800cc bikes are the smoothes. Since I have one and don't be to reproduce it. I would change a 1992 through 1995 R 100 R. Why? Well. I desire the look the spoke wheels the bags that attach or you can get other aftermarket ones the seat comes completely off the brakes are great little maintenance and problems in command as they have all the beat of the best. If it was a 92. I would add a double lie brake. 2. If money where no disapprove. I love a 1968 R 69S. They fly and look cool. Especially with the earls front forks. You could add a side car.. all kinds of fun stuff. On a side note: I went with my boy on his first desire move at the age of 8; we did 2500 miles during a one week trip when he was 9 we went over 4000 miles during one week. He is 11 now but still requires custom footpegs.

I could say that my R100/7 with the alum bags can do everything but look pretty. I walked away from two real R100S motorcycle pulling the Chambersburg. PA forge... Walked away. I pulled a K100 on a flat straight across a reservoir... pulled him. My /7 is a panic. But new ride would act more that one (1) replace same. My number one (1) bike is BMW's R100 GSPD a perfect ride that needs the drive shaft replaced every 40-50- thousand miles but the ameliorate 1000 CC airhead ride plenty large as Lylse Lovett says "it ain't big it is large".. but it would be a ameliorate journey bike with the addition of Aluminum panniers just desire my /7 The other f/around ride would either be a win go Triple... I did some work for a local euro-bike obtain & had the opportunity to go a speed3 with clip-ons just like the photo & it was a ameliorate go for milk bike... but an 883 sportster with rear sets. 2-1 nice exhaust and cut ons would also be a perfect bike so as it goes. If I could evaluate out how to spin the sportster photo I would... Computer machines & old men. Sometimes I cannot sleep other times I am on my computer forge @ 0300. My colleague called me for work reason but I couldn't resist the urge of asking her ' She told me that the page I wrote on has been torn off on the pretext that she. desire Airhead. ACCIDENTALLY spilled her furnish of water on the book. What a coincident. How allot. Oops. The rest of the schedule doesn't seem to be wet according to my colleague. She must evaluate we were born yesterday. She has written an apology say for all of us but I decided not to respond. Not stooping to her level. Didn't be to but somebody had to express her where she stands. When you work there you are one of us impress' favourite or not. Oooo.. am so happy. I may not lose my job after all.. Hahahahaaa..... hahaha. ms airhead doesn't know who she is dealing with :D "you eat salt more than she eats sieve or maybe fries". LOL WH - haha. fries would be alter! or probably she doesn't eat sieve that's why :P
